Local biodiversity can be a hard concept to pin down, especially when the target group are generally small and well dispersed, such as the insects. Networking with an electrician who, among his many tasks, cleans out lamp-holders gave rise to an opportunity to survey the insects that visit different buildings on the University of Nottingham’s campus and get trapped in the lights. The quantity was enormous. What was unexpected was the different species profiles that could be found in different departments. The variation in insect (and other arthropods) species was assessed to the order level as the damage done to the specimens, particularly to Lepidoptera, makes species identification difficult, but taken to species were possible.
